How to Choose Your First Jellycat

You have seen Jellycat on TikTok or Instagram, now you want your first one, but you are not sure what to expect. This is our honest guide from selling Jellycat online and in our physical store since 2019.

Most of the times what a customer wants is something out of the new collection they have just seen on Instagram or TikTok. They come with a screenshot, a saved video, or the name of one exact character. Sometimes they know the full name. Sometimes they only know that it was a bunny, a dragon, an Amuseable, a bag charm, or “the one everyone is posting”.

This is how many people meet Jellycat now. They do not always start by looking for a plush toy. They start with one character they saw online and could not stop thinking about.

The first thing to know is simple: if you really like one Jellycat, do not wait too long.

We do not say this to pressure anyone. It is simply what we see in real life. Often times a Jellycat model runs out very quickly, especially when a new collection piece starts appearing on TikTok or Instagram. Some pieces sell out before we can answer everyone who asked about them.

The price surprise

Often times a surprise comes from the Jellycat pricing. Yes, Jellycat is not inexpensive, and some customers are not prepared for this when they first discover the brand online.

Their design, quality materials, softness, character work, and high demand are what make these beautiful plush toys cost more than many standard soft toys. For some people, this makes sense immediately when they hold one. For others, it is something they need to understand before buying.

Our advice is to choose your first Jellycat as something you really want to keep, not only as something that is trending today.

The softness surprise

Something else that you might not be ready for is how soft they actually are. Jellycat uses very high quality materials, and in case you never touched one before, they are truly soft and hard to let go of.

This is something we see often in our physical store. A customer may come only to look, then picks one up, and the reaction changes immediately. Online, you cannot feel this part before buying, so it is easy to think all plush toys are more or less the same. With Jellycat, the softness is a big part of why people come back.

New collections or classics?

Know the difference between new collections and classics. As much as new drops are taking the current spotlight, the classics such as Bashful Bunnies are always worth seeing, and remain as much sought after as the new characters.

New collection pieces feel exciting because they are current. They are the ones people see online and ask for immediately. Classics feel different. They have already stayed loved for years, and this makes them a safer first choice, especially if you are buying a gift.

New drops

Best if you want what is current, seen online, talked about, and possibly harder to find later.

Classics

Best if you want something timeless, soft, giftable, and easier to love for a long time.

How to start a Jellycat collection

There are two ways in our experience.

The first, and easiest, is to buy what you feel impulsively attracted by. This sounds simple, but it is probably the most honest way to start. If one character makes you smile immediately, that usually means more than trying to follow a rule.

The second way is to stick to a collection type. For example, you can start with Amuseables and gather a group of fruits, foods, drinks, or objects. This gives you a more coherent type of collection. It can also be used better for decorating a room, creating a shelf, or building a certain mood around the pieces.

If this is your first Jellycat, we would not overthink it. Start with the one that feels most like you.

Check the size before buying

Do not judge size only from social media. TikTok and Instagram can make a Jellycat look bigger or smaller than it really is. The way someone holds it, films it, or places it next to other objects can change the impression a lot.

Every model has its size listed on the product page, and it is worth checking before buying. Jellycat sizes are not one standard system. Some pieces are tiny bag charms, some are small desk friends, some are proper cuddle-size plush toys, and some feel more like display pieces.

Also keep in mind that the listed measurement does not always tell the whole visual story. A long bunny, a round Amuseable, and a sitting dragon can all feel different in the hand, even when the numbers look similar. If size matters for you, check the measurements carefully before ordering.

Buying Jellycat online vs in store

In our physical store, people usually want to touch Jellycat before choosing. This makes sense. Softness is part of the experience, and many customers decide only after holding two or three different pieces.

Online, the decision is different. You mostly rely on the photo, the name, the size, the collection, and whether the item is in stock. This is why new arrivals, clear product photos, and correct product information matter so much.

If you are buying as a gift, think about the person first. For a baby or first birthday gift, a soft classic can be a better choice. For someone who has seen Jellycat online and already knows what they want, a newer character or a more unusual piece may feel more exciting.

If the Jellycat you want is sold out

This happens often with Jellycat. A model can run out very quickly, especially if it is from a new collection or if it becomes popular online.

Customers are welcome to sign up for information when the item will be back in stock. This is usually the best option if you know exactly which Jellycat you want and do not want to miss it again.

You can also follow our Instagram and newsletter for new arrivals. This is where we share what has just landed and what is worth checking quickly.

Newest Jellycat arrivals

The newest Jellycat pieces are usually the first ones customers ask about. Check what has just arrived and what is still available now.

Our honest recommendation

If you are choosing your first Jellycat, start with the piece you feel most drawn to. If it is a new drop, check availability quickly. If you are unsure, look at the classics too. They are classics for a reason.

The best first Jellycat is usually not the one someone tells you is the correct one. It is the one you keep coming back to after you close the page.

Quick questions before buying your first Jellycat

Is Jellycat worth the price?

If you are looking only for the cheapest plush toy, then Jellycat is probably not the right comparison. If you care about design, softness, character, gift feeling, and the joy of owning a particular piece, then many customers feel the difference.

Should I buy a new collection item or a classic?

Buy a new collection item if that is the one you really want. Buy a classic if you want a safer first choice, especially for a gift. Both can be good choices.

How should I start a Jellycat collection?

Either buy what you feel immediately attracted by, or collect around one type, such as Amuseables, bunnies, dragons, food characters, or seasonal pieces. The second option makes the collection feel more coherent.

Why should I check the size before buying?

Social media can make the size hard to judge. Every product page lists the model size, and it is worth checking before you order.

What if the Jellycat I want is sold out?

This happens often with popular pieces. You can sign up for information when the item will be back in stock, follow our Instagram, or check the Jellycat page for new arrivals and similar pieces.
